The Carter Shield

The Carter Shield is one of the two inter-college sporting trophies. Throughout the year, all nine colleges take part in a variety of sports, some of which are played as part of a league like football and netball and some of which are played in one day such as tug of war and pop lacrosse. Each event counts for a different number of points and the college with the most number of points at the end of the year is awarded the Carter Shield trophy. Bowland have been the Carter Shield champions of 2005-2006 and 2006-2007.

All members of the University are allowed to take part in Carter Shield events, so if you are interested in representing your college then please contact the sport reps (Colin and Cat) or look out for information put up around the college. For more information also see the LUSU website.

George Wyatt

The George Wyatt is the other inter-college sporting trophy and involves all the bar sports. All nine colleges battle to gain points in men and womens darts, men (who have both A and B teams) and womens pool and in dominoes to be crowned George Wyatt Champions. Bowland were winners of this event in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007.

Trials for all the bar sport teams take place in Freshers Week/Week 1 so look out for information around Bowland (particularly in the pool room) if you would like to take part. All welcome.

The Founders Series

To celebrate Bowland and Lonsdale as the two first colleges, (although we were first and are therefore better!) each year there is a weekend of sports competitions between us too find out who is the greatest college. There is a huge number of events with the likes of basketball, football, cricket, etc and of course bar games and finally the boat race and quiz. Over the weekend there is also some massive socials in the evening that you don’t want to miss. We currently are the champions, and were gonna be fighting for the win again this year. Too find out more about the founders series, visit the all new founders website here.

History Of Sport at Bowland College

As you all know Bowland is the original college. It is also one of the smallest colleges yet this has never seemed to stem the tide of student involvement. Whichever event you’re at be it a Roses Lacrosse game, a George Wyatt pool game or a Carter Shield Aeroball event you are almost always guaranteed to be surrounded by fellow Bowlander’s. However high participation does not amount to certain victory, and Bowland once had an unfortunate reputation on campus; the best support with the most dedicated players but sadly often ending up with the silver medal.

“This year Bowland are going for the hat-trick, which will be an unprecedented achievement for the college.”

However in Summer 2005 that all changed as Bowland won their first piece of silverware for many a year! It was the George Wyatt Trophy that came back to Bowland Bar. George Wyatt is a competition for all the Bar Sports including Men’s and Women’s Pool and Darts and Dominoes. Of course once we had the trophy we wanted to win it again and again and thankfully this is exactly what we have done. With our Men’s Pool A, Men’s Darts and Women’s Darts winning their leagues this year, Bowland have claimed the George Wyatt trophy for the fourth consecutive year. Here’s hoping that we’ll be getting it for the fifth time (and surely then to keep!) in 2009.

For Bowlander’s to be successful at sport we don’t always need to be in a Bar as our performances on the football pitches and netball courts show. In the last few seasons Bowland A’s have finished 3rd in the league and got to the final and semi-final of the cup. The netball team has also gone strength to strength finishing 6th, 3rd and 2nd in the last three years. As well as excellent performances on the field both teams always pull something special out the bag when it comes to the world famous football/netball socials!

“Time for the title ‘The Home of Sport’ to be passed over yet?”

The final inter-college campus event is the all-important Carter Shield. Since the competition began in the 1970’s it has been rather dominated by Fylde, who now refer to themselves as the ‘Home of Sport’ as a result. After getting the taste of victory in 2005 by winning the George Wyatt though Bowlander’s decided they quite liked the feeling and put all their efforts into winning the double and claiming the Carter Shield as well. The Carter Shield takes place every Sunday when a different sport is played and each college must field a team. Thanks to two brilliant Sport Reps, James Marenghi and Sam Vasey, Bowland managed to enter a team in every event and not only that they won a whole lot of them. Finishing the year ahead of Fylde and taking home the Carter Shield. As is the case with the George Wyatt once Bowland had the Shield they won’t going to give it up without a fight and led by Chris Hughes and Lucy Davies they once again beat Fylde into first place in 2007. This year Bowland are going for the hat-trick, which will be an unprecedented achievement for the college. It’s looking good so far as we are sitting 17 points above of our nearest rivals and only have 3 events left to play!

“Once we had the trophy we wanted to win it again and again and thankfully this is exactly what we have done.”

Perhaps the biggest annual sporting event on campus for Bowlander’s is Founders. A three day competition between the two founding colleges Bowland v Lonsdale. The weekend is a sporting extravaganza in which everyone takes part in the socials, bbq’s and sports. It also made great by the fact that Bowland have yet to lose a Founders Series and this summer we’re aiming for our 5th in a row in Founders Series V.
