Bowland JCR Executive

The JCR Exec is an elected body of 19 members. They are elected by the college to organise socials, sport and represent the college at university level. The President and Vice President represent the college’s views within LUSU and the university whilst also ensuring the smooth running of activities within the college. The Chair runs all elections and oversees the democracy of the JCR. The Gen Sec takes minutes of meetings and takes on non-specific roles, while the treasurer is responsible for the JCR budget.
The current exec. have representatives in the form of a female & male education and welfare officer, an international officer, an equal opportunities officer and a green officer. They run campaigns and help raise awareness of the various areas that affect their role, both within the college and on a campus wide scale. The Sports reps help organise inter college sport, while the social secs run the college’s socials. It is the job of the two publicity officers and webmaster to publicise JCR run activities and run the college magazine and website.

How do I get elected?

The whole JCR exec bar the sports reps, are elected in Michaelmas term. Any full member of the college can run for office - all you need is a proposer and a seconder. The sheets normally go up in the bar around week 7, and you have a week to nominate yourself. Following nominations closing, each candidate must give a 2 minute speech (known as a hust) to the college and then answer some questions. Elections take place a few days later following the campaigning period, and results given the day afterwards.

Bye Elections

Sometimes in unforeseen circumstances, or a change in the constitution, we must hold bye-elections. The same protocol as above applies but these could happen at any point throughout the year so keep an eye out!

Sports Reps

At the end of the academic year we elect the two sports reps and the positions of any members of the JCR leaving (For instance, this term we will be electing two publicity officers). So watch out for nominations opening in Week 7 of Summer Term.
