Green Tips

If you are leaving a room turn off the lights on your way out. Especially if your leaving the house, this will have a huge amount of energy.

A normal light bulb uses 60 watts of energy an hour, by turning it off for just one hour a day you could save 22,000 watts per year, that is enough to power your TV evening viewing for a month. Use natural lights in the day to save on using powered lights which will save tonnes of energy.

An appliance on standby can still use up to 70% of its normal power so by turning off your computers and televisions, radios, stereo instead of putting them on standby can save massive amounts of energy.

While the energy that appliances use is quite small, with just about 10 appliances constantly plugged in using power in the transformers/power packs you could be using 360KWh which could power for 2 years a energy efficient light bulb.

“You could save 22,000 watts per year, that is enough to power your TV evening viewing for a month.”

Turning off plug sockets or unplugging appliances is the only way to completely stop power wastage. So try to get into the habit off turning off your plug sockets.

By reusing water bottles for re-use or to keep your lose change in. And re-use plastic bags as bin liners as wells as jars for foodstuffs such as rice, pasta.

Read off your computer screen, only print out if really necessary. Don’t print emails and bank statements. By doing this you can save tonnes of paper each week.

Leave your clothes in the sunlight to dry instead of using a tumble dryer or radiator. It’s free.

Off-campus students: place a brick in the toilet’s water tank – this saves a large amount of water each time the toilet is flushed, and that water isn’t usually necessary to flush the toilet. Please ask the landlord’s permission before any modifications are made to furniture, or check with your relevant contractual agreements.

Don’t drive, take the bus or walk. If you must drive, take more people with you.

Green Recycling Bins Guidance

Glass

If they cannot be re-used, remove all caps, corks, and labels if possible before placing them into recycling. Rinse all jars, and bottles, otherwise bacteria will contaminate the recycling.

Do NOT put light bulbs or window glass, ONLY food/drink glass goes into the recycling bins.

“Leave your clothes in the sunlight to dry instead of using a tumble dryer or radiator. It’s free.”

Paper

Split into paper and corrugated cardboard, there are separate bins for these!

Remove all foodstuffs from them (i.e. pizza crust/crumbs, plastic coating, etc) before they are placed into the recycling bin. Make piles, so that it is easier to recycle.

Milk and fruit juice cartons should not be put into the paper recycling.

Cans / Aluminium

Crisp wrappers cannot be recycled. Do not place these into the recycling bins.

“You could be using 360KWh which could power for 2 years a energy efficient light bulb.”

Note

Bins are recommended to be taken down to the bins at least once every week, in order to stop overflowing of waste, and the build up of bacteria.
If bins are left in an untidy matter, or are not emptied, there is a risk of vermin (rats, mice, cockroaches, etc) invading kitchens.
